What exactly is a fish garden? It’s Aquaponics!
Aquaponics is a hybrid food production technique that includes both aquaculture (fish) and hydroponics (soil-free gardening). Aquaponic systems save about 95% more water and land than traditional gardening techniques while producing up to four times more food! It is the ultimate sustainable gardening system. The plants and fish work symbiotically to provide necessities for one another. The fish produces waste, which is converted into nitrates and nitrites, which the plant uses for nutrients. The plant then filters the water for the fish by removing these nitrates.
Utilizing mason jars, one can have a simple and aesthetically pleasing, organic, desktop aquaponic system in the home. Locally-grown produce anyone?
